The very disappointing start of Obamacare caused the decision to overhaul the government website healthcare.gov. The White House vowed to fix all major bugs by Nov. 30, 2013. This triggered several discussions how to make Obamacare more appealing to consumers without passing new laws. Rick Newman in his article 4 Ways to Fix Obamacare published in Yahoo Finance, suggests the following agenda:
How to Fix Obamacare #1: Customize the Enrollment Experience
“Healthcare.gov is basically one-size-fits-all website that treats all applicants the same. In the private sector, no savvy company would approach consumers that way”.
How to Fix Obamacare #2: Make Obamacare Cooler
The success of Obamacare depends on enrollment of young and healthy adults. “So far, the Federal Obamacare site seems more inclined to turn off millennials than to persuade them to enroll”. Referring young adults under 26 as “children”, usage of unfamiliar terminology, and urging people to call (the generation that does not talk on the phone) do not help. “If enough millennials give Obamacare a thumbs down on social network like Facebook and Twitter, young people may avoid it en masse”.
How to Fix Obamacare #3: Get Insurance Brokers More Involved
The dismal beginning of Obamacare shows that what we need right now is a “cadre of seasoned pro who can guide millions of people to plans that fit their needs and budget”. There is a help available in the form of “navigators” – people who typically work for social-service organizations and have received extra training to help people enroll in Obamacare. “But insurance brokers have many added advantages, such as professional relationship with insurance companies, along with certifications and licenses”.
How to Fix Obamacare #4: Allow Problems to Surface
“For Obamacare to succeed, the people running it must be willing to change it as they figure out what works and what doesn’t. This means acknowledging problems instead of concealing them, no matter how much political heat it draws”.
