Medicare Supplement Plans in Virginia – 2017

Medicare Supplement Plans in Virginia

Medicare Supplement Plans in Virginia, also known as Medigap Plans, fill the gaps in Part A and Part B of Original Medicare, such as deductibles, copayments / coinsurances, and excess charges. They provide protection against Original Medicare out-of-pocket costs; without them your Medicare costs could be very high. Medicare Supplement Plans in Virginia are sold by private insurance companies licensed in Virginia, and like plans in most other US States, they are standardized. There are 10 Standardized Plans, designated by the letters “A” through “N”. Each of them has its own set of benefits, and these benefits are identical for all vendors. In other words, the benefits of Medicare Supplement Plan F from one vendor are the same as benefits from any other vendors. The difference is just a premium, and it may be significantly different from vendor to vendor. That is why knowledge of Medigap vendors and their premiums in your particular area may be quite important.

Medicare Supplement Plans in Virginia: Specific Medigap Regulations

Medigap premiums in Virginia are established using the following factors:

  • Age
  • Zip code (and sometimes a County within the zip code)
  • Gender
  • Whether or not you are a tobacco user.

Rates are usually higher in urban areas and lower in rural areas. Male rates are typically higher than female rates by 10-15%.

The Virginia law allows Medicare providers to charge more than what Medicare allows – the difference is known as Extra Charges. The Medicare Supplement Plans in Virginia that include Extra Charges (Medigap Plan F and Medigap Plan G) are more expensive than plans that do not include them (Medigap Plan C and Medigap Plan D).

The Federal Government has no constraint that would force Medigap providers to sell Medicare policies to people under the age of 65 (Medicare due to disability). Virginia has not added any additional requirements, therefore Medicare Supplement plans for people under 65 are not available in Virginia.

Virginia does not have any additional special Guaranteed Issue windows, such as 30-day birthday period. A household discount is allowed in Virginia, and several Medicare Supplement vendors include it. The typical discount is 5 to 7 percent.
