Delaware Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap Plans)
UPDATED Oct. 28, 2023. Delaware Medigap plans, also known as Delaware Medicare Supplement plans, provide a buffer against the medical expenses that Original Medicare allows, but pays only partially. These expenses, known as out-of-pocket costs, include deductibles, copayments/coinsurances, and excess charges. Without such plans, you may incur significant Medicare health costs.
Delaware Medicare Supplement Plans are sold by private insurance companies licensed in Delaware. Most of Medigap rules and regulations are common in all states (with the exception of Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin). In particular, Standardized Medicare Supplement Plans specify Medigap benefits that are common in all states for all Medigap vendors that offer a specific Medigap plan.
Medigap premium in Delaware is determined by the following factors:
- Age
- Zip code (and sometimes a County within the zip code)
- Gender
- Whether or not you are a tobacco user.
The premiums are typically inflated in urban areas and lower in rural areas. Female premiums generally are 10-15% lower than male premiums. Some Delaware carriers add extra benefits beyond the standard benefits, such as the Vision Plan discount. Contact Liberty Medicare for more information.
Delaware Medicare Supplement Plans: Specific Medigap Regulations
Delaware law does not ban Medicare vendors from charging more than what Medicare allows. This difference is known as Extra Charges. Therefore, the Delaware Medigap Plans that do not include Extra Charges (Medicare Supplement Plan C and Medicare Supplement Plan D) are less expensive than plans that include Extra Charges (Medicare Supplement Plan F and Medicare Supplement Plan G).
The Federal Government has no requirements that would make Medigap carriers to sell Medicare policies to people under the age of 65 which is Medicare due to disability. Most Delaware Medicare Supplement vendors offer all Medigap plans for people age 40-64, but the premiums are prohibitively high – much higher than premiums for people who are 65 years old.
Besides standard Guaranteed Issue Rights, some states have additional Guaranteed Issue Periods, such as a 30-days birthday period. Delaware does not have such periods. Delaware does permit a household discount to be applied to Medigap plans, and more than a few Medicare Supplement vendors offer this reduction.
